A region in two halves. Closer in, Preston, Reservoir, Ivanhoe and Thornbury are postwar brick veneer and weatherboard, a lot of it renovated in the last ten years, much of it rented. Further out, Mernda, Doreen and South Morang are new estate housing that has gone up fast and keeps going up.
New estates come with their own cleaning problem, and it is dust. A house with construction still happening two streets away gets a fine grit through everything, and it settles back an hour after you have wiped. It wants a different order of work rather than more effort, and it is why a first clean in a new estate takes longer than the same house will next time.
